9: Actually what I meant by anime and American comics being the same like that was just with the stereotypes.. but my imagination ran off on me.
I was about to take it back..

And actually, I do remember now..
I read that American and Japanese things from an article somewhere that I stumbled on..
It said that the American industry was crippled and that the Japanese one **stops**

Can you guys hang on a second?.. I'm not finished with this thought but I have to go somewhere and I hit the post button by accident..

i used to think a lot of anime, like bleach, for instance, sucked, until i watched them without the english dub. this doesn't hold true for all, but most are best watched with subtitles

9, 11: Okay, so, like I said, I was about to take that back..
What I meant was that anime/manga has a similar age group and stereotypes associated with it..
Similar.
Not exactly the same.. manga is a distinct style..
I was really just trying to reply to sdoodle2000's comment about age.

There's also perhaps still some cultural differences.

But it's still technically a comic.

A lot of the things I said came from an article I stumbled.
It said that American and Japanese animation used to be quite similar for a while.
But then there was some kind of law passed that virtually destroyed it.
It said that they have similar troubles as the Americans, but that it never really damaged them the way it did the American industry.

So the Japanese stuff become successful and the subject matter became more diverse as did the writing..

I don't know if I'm right about this.. But if I understood things correctly, that all seems to make sense to me..

What you said is valid as well..
..I'm still trying to put that together in my head though.. Which is probably do to sleep deprivation..

I'll add that the Japanese view those that watch a lot of anime as something kinda strange..
Surely, you've watched a little bit of Genshiken?.. This makes it quite different than American television.

BTW, I only used the word "developed" for lack of a better term.. I meant it has a broader range of subject and it's larger and more popular.. with perhaps more examples of umm... what not to do in animation.. or something.. like old films, see.. That's why I used that example.
They have more.. umm..
...
I don't know how to explain it.
Anything can be improved.
Even if it's something as complex as art, people can learn how to express themselves differently and more clearly..
I'm not saying it right..

This is why I hate things like debating and brainstorming..

wolfknight1, I agree. It's surprising how much art actually goes into the translation and voice acting. For example, Cowboy Bebob -- in Japanese, it's one of the greatest shows ever made. In English, it's one of the worst shows ever, period.

A lot of it is personal taste, but the rewrites that translation requires can make or break a show. My most recent peeve: Whoever translated Venus Versus Virus is an idiot.

And it's not just voice-acting skill. Casting is everything. Princess Mononoke is painful to watch in English because the actors were chosen for name recognition rather than their appropriateness for their roles.

I just wanted to pipe in and remind everyone that American comics aren't dead yet, although popular animation certainly is in a bit of a comedy 'holding pattern'... lots of good smaller-audience series, though.

As for comics, the list of stuff that could compete with the best manga is long. This is just the current continuing/recently-ended series along with new (one-off) releases, not a historical top list:

Scott Pilgrim by O'Malley
Hellboy, BPRD, other miniseries by Mignola
Y the Last Man, Ex Machina by Vaughn
Runaways by Vaughn/Whedon

Powers by Bendis
American Virgin by Seagle (non-supernatural drama/adventure/etc)
Tank Girl: The Gifting by Martin
Army @ Love by Veitch (satirical 'altered reality' version of the war)
Strange Girl by Remender (revelation-y demons control the earth thing)

I didn't find these as good, but worth mentioning:

Woordwood by Templesmith - Delightful vision but the writing just isn't there yet.
Buffy Season 8 - Vaughn part good, Whedon parts weak but improving.
Astonishing X-Men - More Whedon improving... slowly.

& of course, The League of Extrodinary Gentleman: Black Dossier, possibly Moore's most divisive 'comic' yet; at his best/worst. For what it's worth, take a look at it - it shows that american comics can go blow for blow in weirdness in both form and content.

For reference, this is the manga I (mostly continued) to follow last year:

Berserk
Blame
Death Note
Hellsing

Are you seriously saying that Buffy and X-Men are as good as manga in the Anime & Manga forum?
And the later days of them at that..

Series like those just get crappier and crappier as they get older.
I mean, okay, from what I recall, X-Men wasn't really that bad ('course, then again, I was about twelve when I was thinking that).. but I highly doubt that it's worth anything now that they've made it into a film.

And Buffy?? That show on the WB network? LOL no.

16: Maybe when you get a little older (you precocious tyke!) that you'll learn the author (the man or woman who wrote the book) is more indicative of quality than the title.

It's also interesting that the two bones you pick are the two I said I didn't really like but mentioned due to the critical reaction. If you want good superhero, grant morrison's run on "New X-men" is far more involving then whedon's enthusiastic amateurishness. So you haven't even heard of the others, lawl.

You know what's funny? I've probably read more manga than you, too! LOL please try again.

17: All right, fine, I was too harsh and I didn't read your review properly..
Might be due to lack of sleep.. and because I've been spending too much time on that shit of a website known as 4chan..
I apologize.

Still, this forum is for Japanese comics.

18: repku: fair 'nuff.

Is anyone reading Gantz? Delightfully twisted. My fav in 'the genre' since Battle Royale.

19: I think you might want to start a new thread for that..
